Chapter 8 - 1995

To infinity and beyond!... It was a year of technological advancement that would significantly change our lives. The Internet entered the general public’s consciousness, with the release of browsers making it easily accessible. Microsoft introduces Windows 95, Ebay started the online auction and shopping website and Yahoo was incorporated. The DVD, optical disc storage media format, is announced, the Sony PlayStation was launched world wide and “Toy Story” the first ever wholly computer generated film was released.
The animated films “Toy Story” and “Pocahontas” were two of the year's biggest box-office hits, “Braveheart” won the Academy Award for Best Picture and after a six-year hiatus, the James Bond film series resumes with the successful “GoldenEye” with Pierce Brosnan as James Bond.
Michael Jackson released his first double-album “HIStory”, which became the best-selling multiple-album of all-time and Robbie Williams announces he is quitting Take That.
The United Kingdom's oldest investment banking firm, Barings Bank collapses after securities broker Nick Leeson lost $1.4 billion by speculating on the Tokyo stock exchange and with Kenny Dalglish as Manager, Blackburn Rovers Football Club became Premier League champions, having spent millions of pounds on players, denying Manchester United a hat trick of titles.

Whilst the rest of the world was making huge strides forward, Cathy and I had planned to broaden our cultural horizons and together with two very close friends we arranged a holiday that would provide us with the opportunity to explore the foundations of western culture. It was my first holiday abroad without my parents and our destination was the philosophical, artistic, scientific and politically sophisticated Greek island of distinction, Corfu. We were very excited and prepared for a feast of history, mythology and exploration. Having disembarked from the plane and boarded the coach, the anticipation increased as we neared our holiday resort and were finally welcomed with the huge sign that said “Welcome to Kavos HELL”. Yes we were entering Kavos. A fantastic, popular and lively “young persons” resort. One of the original and best “lads” holiday destinations and one of the clubbing epicentres of Europe. Perhaps not what we were expecting but our disappointment was immediately dealt with once we identified that the hotel bar was open 24 hours. Of course we made the most of it and after I recovered from alcohol poisoning, we enjoyed the sun, sea, sand and smoke. Another year had shot by without even the slightest thought of quitting.
